303, Lot: 62. Estimate $100.
Sold for $320. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Tetartemorion(?) (6mm, 0.17 g, 12h). Head of lion(?) right / Incuse archaic style head right. Apparently unpublished. Near VF, toned, porous.

The head on the reverse is similar to the archaic heads found on the early silver fractions of Kolophon (see Kim & Kroll), but the fact of it being incuse, and the obverse type, which is not likely at Kolophon, makes an assignment to that mint unlikely. Silver fractions of this type, obverse figure in relief, reverse in incuse, are typically found in early issues from the Troad (esp. Dardanos), but the types on this issue are not identified with any of those mints in particular.
