301, Lot: 362. Estimate $150.
Sold for $280. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Commercial weights. Circa 6th century. Æ Two ounce weight (34mm, 50.27 g). Cross above Γ B; all within scallop border / Blank but for numerous scratches to keep weight in place. Cf. Bendall 122. Good VF, attractive green patina that is chipped slightly around the edge, a couple of scrapes revealing bare metal.

The weight published in Bendal is very similar in design, but, interestingly, was revalidated under the Caliph al-Walid (AD 705-715) and carries the following Kufic legend engraved on the back: “In the name of God; Mohammed is the Messenger of God; Equity is God’s. This is [a weight] of two ounces which Abdullah al-Walid, Commander of the Faithful has established.”
