301, Lot: 49. Estimate $150.
Sold for $130. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

BITHYNIA, Kalchedon. Circa 260-220 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 16.68 g, 11h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedonia. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; ΘE monogram above knee, KA monogram below throne. Price 919 var. (K below throne). Near VF, some porosity, die shift on reverse.

See U. Wartenberg & J.H. Kagan, “Some Comments on a New Hoard from the Balkan Sea” in Travaux Le Rider, pp. 402–5, for the reattribution of this, and many of the other issues Price assigned to Kallatis, to Kalchedon.

As no examples of Price 919 are illustrated in any collection (Price gives no source for this type), it is possible that the letter under the throne was misread by Price, and it should be a KA monogram as on this piece (and others in the series).
