KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Philip III – Lysimachos. Circa 323-280 BC. AR Drachm (18mm, 4.21 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Uncertain mint in western Asia Minor. Circa 290-275 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, forepart of lion left above monogram; below throne, head of griffin right. Cf. Price 1580 (no griffin’s head below throne) and 1581 (lion and monogram switched, head wearing Phrygian cap below throne; “Abydos mint?”); Hersh, Additions –; Arena –. Good VF, toned.


The monogram on the present coin is unclear and could be either that of Price 1580 or, perhaps more likely, the slightly different variant on Price 1581.
