THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 450/40-420 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 5.95 g, 6h). Youthful hero Thessalos, wearing chlamys, restraining bull left by band held around its head; below, hero’s petasos falling to the ground / ΛAPI/ΣAIA in two lines above, bridled horse pacing left; all within shallow incuse circle. Lorber, Thessalian -; BCD Thessaly II 370.2 (same obv. die); Herrmann Group III L, pl. IV, 3 (same obv. die). VF, lightly toned.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from BCD from the Triton sale: “At the time Herrmann wrote his article, he thought that the coin of this type was unique; he knew just one specimen, in Berlin. The interest of this coin lies in that its inscription clearly refers to the actual coin itself and not to the issuing authority: ΛAPIΣAIA (ΔPAXMH) instead of ΛAPIΣAIΩN; ‘Larisseian (drachm)’ instead of ‘of the Larisseians’.”
