THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 440-400 BC. AR Trihemiobol (13mm, 1.40 g, 7h). Horseman, wearing petasos and chlamys, riding left, holding spear / ΛAPIΣA downward to right, the nymph Larissa seated right on draped chair with curved legs, arranging her hair with right hand, holding up mirror in left; all within shallow incuse square. BCD Thessaly II 362.3 (same dies). Good VF, toned, minor porosity. Fine style.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from BCD from the Triton sale: “In contrast to the other reverses, this one seems to record a scene that takes place indoors. There is a rather elaborate cover on the chair and the nymph is wearing an elegant dress and a drop earring. Perhaps the artist is alluding to a scene from real life, like preparing for a dance or a special occasion.”
