From the Peter Moffat Collection. Ex Christie’s (14 April 1981), lot 126; 1967 Bolton Percy Hoard.

Discovered in late autumn of 1967 after two schoolboys discovered some scattered coins in a field near the bank of the river Wharfe, the Bolton Percy Hoard yielded close to 1800 bronze coins of the mid 9th century and was likely part of an earlier, unrecorded hoard found in 1846 and containing an additional 2000 coins. We can only speculate on the circumstances of the burial of some 4000 Northumbrian bronzes, but a Viking attack on the region in 866 provides a possibly clue.
