Research Coins: Electronic Auction

282, Lot: 333. Estimate $100.
Sold for $800. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Geta. AD 209-211. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.11 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 210. Laureate bust right / Victory seated left on shields, holding shield on right knee and palm. RIC -; RSC -; BMCRE -. Good VF, toned, struck from a worn reverse die.

Ex J. S. Vogelaar Collection (Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 215), lot 473.

This reverse type is unknown on coins of Geta. It is known, however, for aurei of Caracalla (RIC IV 174). As the reverse die is worn, it is possible that the minters felt the die was too deteriorated to continue producing aurei, but sufficient for striking denarii.
