CILICIA, Diocaesarea. Faustina Junior. Augusta, AD 147-175. Æ (27mm, 11.38 g, 6h). Draped bust right / Winged thunderbolt. SNG France 875 (same obv. die); SNG Levante -. Good Fine, dark green, almost black, patina, minor roughness.

From the R. D. Frederick Collection.

There is some disagreement as to who is represented on this coin. The obverse legend “Annia Faustina Augusta” led the authors of SNG France to attribute the coin to Annia Faustina, wife of Elagabalus. Staffieri, Sear, and Ziegler all refer to her as Faustina Junior, as the style better fits Faustina Junior and the name “Annia” is found on some other of her coins. Furthermore, it appears that coins in the name of Elagabalus were not struck at Diocaesarea, so a coin in his wife’s name would be highly unlikely.
