Trajan. AD 98-117. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.54 g, 7h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 112-113. Laureate bust right, slight drapery / Marcus Ulpius Traianus (Trajan’s father) seated left on curule chair, holding patera and scepter. RIC II 252; Woytek 406b; RSC 140. Good VF, a few small marks before brow.


Trajan’s Forum featured a temple to the emperor’s deified father, situated behind Trajan’s monumental column. Upon the emperor’s death, his body was interred in the base of the column and the adjacent temple was rededicated to the deified ruler.
