Unpublished & Highly Interesting

259, Lot: 416. Estimate $200.
Sold for $1100. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Anastasius I. 491-518. Æ Follis (23mm, 8.23 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 498-518. Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Large M; cross above, star flanking; [?]//CON; all within wreath. Unpublished. VF, dark green-brown patina.

A highly interesting coin, not only due to the presence of the wreath on the reverse, which is otherwise unknown, but also to the result of the application of four countermarks: one a crescent, the remaining rosettes (perhaps intended as a solar or stellar design).
