Very Rare Potidaia Bronze

254, Lot: 31. Estimate $100.
Sold for $380. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

MACEDON, Potidaia. Circa 400-356 BC. Æ (10mm, 1.31 g, 6h). Female head right, hair in korymbos, wearing earring and necklace / Bull butting right. Alexander p. 216; AMNG 11 note; SNG ANS -; BMC -; Weber -; Traité IV 958; Head, HN, p. 212. VF, green patina. Very rare.

At the time of Alexander’s article on the coinage of Potidaia, Gaebler, in AMNG, had discounted the earlier reading of the ethnic on one coin, remarking that it was BOTTI rather than ΠOTEI. The ethnic on the present specimen, however, clearly shows ΠOTEI, vindicating the reading of the earlier authors.
