Extremely Rare Peirasia Bronze

236, Lot: 92. Estimate $300.
Sold for $1200. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Peirasia. Circa 350-300 BC. Æ (18mm, 5.27 g, 6h). Helmeted head of Athena right / Athena Itonia standing right. E.J. Pendleton, “The coinage of Peirasia,” SNR 87, BL2 (O1/R2?). Good VF, green patina. Extremely rare.

In Elizabeth Pendleton’s recent study, the first to comprehensively treat the coinage of Peirasia, only seven large module bronzes are cited. The current specimen is the second coin of Peirasia ever offered by CNG and the first in bronze. This is a rare opportunity to acquire part of the Peirasia’s coinage which, as Pendleton writes, “is obscure almost to the point of invisibility.”
