SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. Æ Hemilitron (17mm, 5.37 g). Obverse die signed by the artist E(uainetos?). Struck circa 410-405 BC. Head of Arethusa left, hair in sphendone; E behind / Star of eight rays within incuse circle in center of quadripartite incuse square. CNS 16; SNG ANS 398-402. VF, green patina.

From the Jörg Müller Collection.

The meaning of the E on the obverse of this type has been the subject of much debate, and is most likely an artist’s signature, perhaps that of the engraver responsible for the famous issue of decadrachms, Euainetos.
