221, Lot: 52. Estimate $300.
Sold for $430. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ACHAIA, Patrai. Circa 35 BC. AR Hemidrachm (15mm, 2.33 g, 2h). Damasias, son of Agesilaus, magistrate. Head of Aphrodite right, wearing stephanos / ΔA/MACIAC in two lines above Patrai monogram; all within wreath. BCD Peloponnesos 525-8. Good VF, toned.

Ex BCD Collection (not in previous sales); Lepczyk 62 (17 May 1985), lot 44.

The LHS catalogue notes: “A date in the mid to late 30’s, in conjunction with Antony’s preparations for the coming war with Octavian, makes good sense for this issue. The head of Aphrodite is very close to that of Cleopatra, which appears on the slightly later hemiobols minted by Agias Lysonos.”
