Very Rare Philadelphia Bronze

218, Lot: 353. Estimate $500.
Sold for $300. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

LYDIA, Philadelphia. Tiberius(?). AD 14-37. Æ 13mm (3.64 g). Bare head right / Thunderbolt. RPC 3017/1 (same obv. die as illustration). Near VF, dark green patina. Very rare.

From the D. Alighieri Collection.

The attribution of this coin is complicated by the celator’s recutting of the single obverse die used to strike this issue. While it is possible that the letter traces could read CEBACTON, RPC notes that this reading, as well as the identification with Tiberius, is uncertain.
