Born into a noble family in Bologna, Benedict XIV was known for his reforms in the education of priests along with his views concerning the presentation of the Church to native or foreign cultures. He supported the custom of utilizing Christian terminology for the purpose of relating one culture’s religious views to those of the Church, such as the New World or the Far East. He also spoke out against the mistreatment and enslavement of inhabitants in these areas.
