Sold for $345. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Q. Oppius Pr. Circa 45 BC. Æ Dupondius(?) (27mm, 13.90 g). Italian mint(?). Diademed head of Venus right; crescent below chin / Victory advancing left, head right, holding palm frond and plate of fruit. Crawford 550/2b; CRI 507; RPC I 602; Sydenham 1277. Fine, dark green patina.

The dating and location of the mint for this issue remains conjectural. Crawford assigns the coinage to Cilicia in 88 BC, Grant calls them Syrian issues of the late triumval period and the authors of RPC assign them to an uncertain Italian mint circa 45 BC.
