An important city in northern Arkadia, Kleitor was originally a member of the Peloponnesian League before becoming an influential member of the Arkadian Confederacy in the early 5th century BC. Her first coinage was struck as a member of the Arkadian Confederacy, but the present piece is from among the earliest coins struck as a local coinage. Unlike the confederate issues, these coins have purely local types, and are quite rare.
