ARABIA, Philippopolis. Divus Julius Marinus. Died before AD 244. Æ 23mm (6.65 g). Bare-headed bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder, supported by eagle standing right / Roma standing left, holding phiale and spear; shield at feet. Spijkerman 1/2 (obv./rev.); Hendin 897a var. (Roma seated left); SNG ANS 1402. Fine, rough brown surfaces, holed and plugged behind neck. Very rare.


Though the dates of both events are uncertain, at some point during his reign Philip I deified his deceased father and built a temple to him. The boyhood hometown of Philip I was renamed Philippopolis in the emperor’s honor.
