171, Lot: 401. Estimate $100.
Sold for $287. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Elagabalus. AD 218-222. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.98 g). Rome mint. Struck AD 221-222. Laureate and draped bust right, horn on forehead / Emperor standing left, holding patera over tripod-altar and branch; no star in left field. RIC IV -; RSC 276f. EF, lightly toned. Very rare.

Apparently a quite rare variant not having the star in the reverse field, unrecorded in both RIC and BMC, known only from the Tinchant collection.
