Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / The emperor, holding sceptre, being greeted by Alexandria, who kisses his hand and presents him with grain ears; date across fields. Köln 1034; Milne 1315; Emmett 964. VF, brown patina with spots of verdigris. A charming representation of Alexandria greeting the visiting emperor.


An extensive series of silver and bronze issues marks Hadrian’s triumphant tour of Egypt in AD 130. The trip was marred by the tragic and mysterious death of Hadrian’s young companion Antinous on their boat trip up the Nile.
