Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. AV Aureus (20mm, 7.64 g). Colonia Patricia(?) mint. Struck 18-17 BC. Bare head right / Triumphal arch; above central arch, Augustus driving a facing quadriga, figure on left arch holding a standard, figure on right arch holding an aquila and bow. RIC I 131 (same dies); BMCRE 427 (same dies); Calico 193 (same dies). VF, obverse test cut (a damnatio? Unusual on a coin of Augustus. Rare.


The Arcus Augusti was erected in the Roman Forum in 20 BC, celebrating the return of the battle standards lost by Crassus and other commanders during the wars with Parthia. The legend reproduces the dedication on the entablature of the arch.
