167, Lot: 84. Estimate $150.
Sold for $215. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Anonymous. After 211 BC. AR Victoriatus (15mm, 3.17 g). Laureate head of Jupiter right / Victory on left, standing right, crowning trophy with laurel-wreath. Crawford 53/1; Sydenham 83; RSC 9. Good VF, underlying luster.

From the C. G. Collection. Ex Stack’s (13 November 1991), lot 435.

Very unusual treatment of the Zeus portrait, with a broad head, similar in style to Kestner 447. Also like the Kestner piece, Nike’s chiton is drawn up into a knot at her waist, shown as a large pellet. A possible branch mint issue?
