Unrecorded Persis Hemidrachm

165, Lot: 79. Estimate $100.
Sold for $78. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of PERSIS. Artaxerxes (Ardaxshir) II. Late 1st century BC. AR Hemidrachm (17mm, 1.81 g). Bust left, wearing turreted and diademed crown; monogram (with inner “V”) behind, crescent with pellet above monogram / Fire altar with king to right. Alram 575 var (no crescent); cf. BMC Arabia p. 222, 4 (drachm). Good VF, toned, muddled strike on reverse.

The crescent and pellet are in the same position as the more familiar symbols seen on coins of the kingdom of Elymais from the time of Orodes I onward. If our chronologies are correct, the use of these symbols on this Persid coin pre-dates the Elymais types by several decades.
