Ex Morton & Eden 103 (24 October 2019), lot 89 (sold with mount still attached).

Nur Jahan, whose name translates as ‘Light of the World’, was the favourite of Jahangir’s twenty wives. Celebrated no less for her political acumen than for her beauty, she was the power behind the throne from the time of her marriage until Jahangir’s death. Not only did she advise her husband privately on matters of state, but she also held audiences at her palace which Jahangir’s minsters attended in person. Jahangir honoured her by having her named on the coinage from AH 1033, when this mohur was struck, until his death in AH 1037. He was succeeded by Shah Jahan, who detested his stepmother and ordered - on pain of death - that coins bearing her name should be recalled and melted; this may account for their great rarity today.

The legend on the reverse includes the verse:‘Gold gained a hundred beauties when it was struck with the name of Nur Jahan.’
