GREEK. Northern Greece. Hellenistic Socketed Spear Butt Spike. Circa 550-450 BC. (13” / 33 cm long). Tapering rounded cross-section, with short socket pierced for hafting to pole. Intact and complete; green patina with light earthen encrustation.

From the Kenneth W. Dorney Collection.

The Greek spear, or dory, had both a metal head with a flat, leaf-shaped blade and a long spike, termed a sauroter or “lizard-killer,” at the terminal end. This was used to counterbalance the weight of the head, to enable the spear to be sunken upright into the earth, and, occasionally, to dispatch a fallen foe.

Closing Date and Time: 14 December 2022 at 15:31:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 20% buyer’s fee.
