DIE RACHE DER · FRAN ZOSEN (The Revenge of the French), French soldier, smoking cigarette, seated left on broken monuments inscribed DEN/TAPFERN/KÄMPFER/SOMM[E] (To the Brave Fighter – Somme) and STURM/AUF DEM/KEMMEL/1918 (Storm on the Kemmel 1918), juggling two skulls and pickelhaube; to right, clenched fist rising from rubble and grain ear; 1920 in exergue / DER TOTEN GRÆBER (The Gravedigger), same French soldier seated on ground with shovel, holding skull wearing pickelhaube; skull with banner inscribed HEUT AN MIR/MOGEN AN DIR (Today on me; tomorrow on you) clenche in teeth; in background, broken tombstone inscribed HIER/RUHEN/DEUTSCHE/HELDEN (); K ·G to right.
