Postumus. Romano-Gallic Emperor, AD 260-269. Æ Double Sestertius (29.5mm, 20.82 g, 11h). Uncertain mint. Radiate and draped bust of Postumus right / Uncertain reverse. Undertype: Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius right / Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond. Undertype: cf. RIC III 948; cf. MIR 18, 151-6/30; cf. Banti 438. Tan and brassy surfaces, some roughness, scratch on obverse. Fine. Overstruck on a Sestertius of Marcus Aurelius from Rome mint. Host coin struck AD 167(?). The overstrike is very weak, leaving only the radiate crown, coincidentally situated perfectly atop Aurelius’s head. |
