ITALY, Milano (Duchy). Francesco II Sforza. 1521-1535. AR Grosso da 10 soldi semprevivo (26mm, 4.44 g, 8h). Three flowering mounds of sempervivum (hen & chicks); rosettes flanking / Crowned coat-of-arms; olive branch and palm frond in crown. MIR 270; Crippa 5. Rich iridescent toned, a few minor edge bumps. VF.

From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection. Ex Bolaffi 39 (27 May 2021), lot 197.

The sempervivum plant, also known as houseleek or hen & chicks, is a popular succulent plant native to Europe, North Africa, and the near east. In the wild, the plant can be found on rocks in mountainous areas. It is often grown as an ornamental ground cover on stone walls. The plant likely symbolizes the return of the Sforza family to power in Milan after a twenty year period of French rule.
