POTTERY. Greek Southern Italian Colonies. c. 4th-3rd Cent. BCE. (142 mm tall x 270 mm wide). A very finely worked Apulian style skyphos with a very slight rounded flat foot and wide, tall cup with no lip. On sides, small handles. The painting on the cup is complex and well done. On one side, a woman in a simple gown sits, holding a distaff spinning. Her other hand is raised to her head. The significance of this image suggests both the spinning of fate, associated to the Moirai. It is also often associated to prostitutes at the time, who on their down time would often spin. On the opposing side, a winged Nike holding a wreath in an extended arm advances to the spinner. Between them, a large rosette. Reassembled from fragments. The paint touched up with some level of skill. A large and attractive piece.

From the Sand Collection.
