The legionary issues of Septimius Severus were struck at the outset of his reign, to honor the Roman legions that had supported his bid for the throne from the beginning. Legions so honored included Legio I Adiutrix, Legio I Italica, Legio I Minervia, Legio II Adiutrix, Legio II Italica, Legio III Italica, Legio IIII Flavia, Legio V Macedonica, Legio VII Claudia, Legio XI Claudia, Legio VIII Augusta, Legio XIII Gemina Marta Victrix, Legio XIIII Gemina Marta Victrix, Legio XXII Primegenia, and Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix.
