EGYPT, Alexandria. Trajan. AD 98-117. BI Tetradrachm (24mm, 12.98 g, 12h). Dated RY 17 (AD 113/4). AYT TPAIAN CЄB ΓЄPM ΔAKIK, laureate head right; star to right / Bust of Nilus right, crowned with taenia and lotus buds, drapery on far shoulder; cornucopia at right shoulder; L IZ (date) in right field. Unpublished for year 17. Dark brown patina, slight double strike. VF. Extremely rare, presently unique.

From the Dr. Thomas E. Beniak Collection. Ex Münzen und Medaillen GmbH 1 (16 September 1997), lot 521.

RPC only records two tetradrachms for Trajan’s year 17 which share the same obverse die as this coin. The reverse types are similar as well; busts of Serapis and Zeus, so the popular bust of Nilus type is not unexpected. All three are exceedingly rare with RPC only recording three of the Serapis and one of the Zeus types.

Closing Date and Time: 21 February 2024 at 11:56:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
