Circa 11th-13th centuries. Æ Weight (19x16.5mm, 15.84 g). Two nimbate facing busts / Large cross with three pellets at end of each extremity; three pellets flanking; pellet in each corner. Dark brown and bronze surfaces, significant silver inlay remaining. VF.

Ex Leu Web 16 (22 May 2021), lot 4090.

A interesting weight, likely belonging to the Medieval period. Of uncertain denomination and origin. The cross on the reverse could be a stylized Jerusalem cross in pelleted form. The Jerusalem cross features four small crosses in the fields which represent the four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This iconography could correlate on this piece to the four pellets in the corners. These pellets could alternatively simply be decorative. Perhaps a Crusader-era weight of localized commercial nature.
