The grandson of Louis XV and brother of Louis XVI, Louis Stanislas Xavier (1755-1824), fled France during the Revolution. While still in exile, he declared himself King of France upon his brother’s death in 1795, but it was not until 1814 – after the fall of Napoleon – that he would actually ascend the throne and restore the French monarchy as King Louis XVIII.

The first depicts the personification of France welcoming the ship bearing Louis back to France when he landed at Calais (24 April 1814) to a rapturous reception. It was the first time he had been in France for more than two decades, when he fled the increasingly radical French Revolution in the middle of the night, disguised as an English businessman. The second illustrates his 3 May 1814 triumphal entry into Paris. The final medal commemorates the settlement achieved at the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle in the autumn of 1818, in which the French renegotiated the reparations owed by France to the allied powers of Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia, won the withdrawal of the occupying armies from the country, and restored the position of France as a European power.
