Michael II the Amorian, with Theophilus. 820-829. Æ Follis (18mm, 5.61 g, 7h). Syracuse mint. Struck 821-829. Crowned facing busts of Michael, wearing chlamys, and Theophilus, wearing loros / Large M; cross above, Θ below. DOC 21; Anastasi 513; SB 1652. Dark brown patina, cleaning scratches. Good VF.

From the Iconodule Collection. Ex Dr. Max Blaschegg Collection (Leu Web 22, 20 August 2022), lot 304; purchased from Dr. Frank Sternberg at the Zürich coin fair, 26 October 1996.

Anastasi erroneously argues on p. 213 that the M denomination mark stands for ‘Michael’ rather than 40 Nummi and consequently says that there are both folles and half folles for this issue. This distinction should be disregarded.

Closing Date and Time: 18 October 2023 at 13:54:40 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
