Maurice Tiberius. 582-602. Æ Decanummium (15.5mm, 1.94 g, 7h). Western Military Mint. Crowned, draped, and cuirassed facing bust / Large I; cross above; * to left, A to right; KωNO. DOC –; cf. MIBE 92B (Cyzicus; for type); cf. MIBE 153 (Half Follis; for mint mark) cf. SB 601 (for similar Decanummium and mint). Brown patina, light cleaning scratches. Good Fine. Overstruck on a pentanummium.

From the Iconodule Collection.

An interesting new find for Maurice’s western military mint. This type is known as a decanummium from Cyzicus. However, the mint mark of this example clearly belongs with Maurice’s western military mint somewhere near Rome. There is a half follis from this series that bears this same mint mark KωN (MIBE 153). Additionally, there is a relatively similar decanummium from the military mint with the I with crossbars denomination mark (MIBE 141) as is found here. Finally, this coin is overstruck on an uncertain pentanummium with the Є denomination mark quite visible at 9h on the obverse. Overstriking is a frequently encountered phenomenon at the military mints which explains the low weight for this decanummium (many other decanummi from similar series weigh between 4-5 g). Comfortably fitting here alongside normal pentanummi weights at approximately 2 g is this decanummium overstruck on an earlier pentanummium. Given the confluence here of style, mint mark, and type, it appears safe to firmly attribute this specimen as a new type of decanummium for Maurice at the western military mint.
