COELESYRIA, Damascus. Tiberius. As Caesar, AD 4-14. Æ (19mm, 9.15 g, 12h). Dated SE 325 (AD 13/14). Bare head right / Draped bust of Tyche right, wearing mural crown; L ЄKT (date) to left. RPC I 4795.10 (this coin, [Augustus, note]); BMC 3 (male head, time of Augustus). Rough green patina, cleaning marks, off center obverse. Near VF. Rare.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group 75 (23 May 2007), lot 844.

RPC catalogues this coin under Augustus but notes: “Presumably the head is supposed to be an imperial portrait; if so, Tiberius seems more likely, in view of its youthful look and similarity to the portraits on other Tiberian coins (4797–8). The portrait is not like that on 4793–4.” With this information; the bare head and the clear date on other specimens, we have catalogued this coin as Tiberius as Caesar.

Closing Date and Time: 18 October 2023 at 11:58:40 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
