SELEUCIS and PIERIA, Paltus. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ (22mm, 8.73 g, 12h). Struck AD 194. Laureate head right / Tyche seated left, holding cornucopia, half-figure of a river-god at her feet left. Meyer-Wittelhoffer 8. Brown surfaces, porosity. Near VF. Extremely rare.

From the Dr. Michael Slavin Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 66 (19 May 2004), lot 1254.

The ЄΓPH at the beginning of the reverse legend is enigmatic. Two coins of Severus (with Julia Domna) from Paltus in the Hunterian, pg. 209, 1 and 3, have a similar first word in the reverse legend, ЄΓΓPHA. No satisfactory explanation of this word has been forthcoming.

Closing Date and Time: 18 October 2023 at 11:58:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
