ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 2nd-3rd century AD. PB Tessera (15mm, 3.26 g, 11h). Figure riding dolphin right, holding whip in raised hand; fish(?) below / Rooster (or eagle?) standing right; uncertain object above. Cf. Naumann 11, lot 660, otherwise unpublished. VF.

This interesting piece belongs to a small series, probably from somewhere in Asia Minor, that can be distinguished by the beaded border and consistent style. Like the lead tesserae from Ephesus, this series is also found overstruck and in various mixed obverse/reverse combinations. The types seen thus far include:

Figure riding dolphin / Rooster (or eagle?)
– Naumann 11, lot 660

Rooster (or eagle?) / Dolphin left
– Leu Web Auction 16, lot 3206

Rooster (or eagle?) / Dolphin right over kantharos
– Leu Web Auction 19, lot 2330

Figure riding dolphin / Goat standing right
– Nomos obolos 15, lot 574
