PISIDIA, Sagalassus. Antonine Era. AD 138-192. Æ (16mm, 2.76 g, 12h). Diademed and draped bust of Hermes right, caduceus on shoulder / CAΓAΛAC, bust of Mên right, wearing Phrygian cap, crescent on shoulders. Lindgren III 716 (this coin), otherwise unpublished. Brown patina, light roughness. Near VF. Extremely rare, unpublished in the standard references.

From the Aleph Collection. Ex Frank Kovacs; Forum Ancient Coins inventory 45859; Henry Clay Lindgren Collection.

The dating of this coin is problematic. This general obverse type, with Hermes and his caduceus, is common throughout the region of Pisidia and during different eras. This smaller module was seemingly only struck during the Antonine era, however, all of those, regardless of city, show a bareheaded Hermes with his caduceus before him. The caduceus over the shoulder types appear on the larger denominations beginning with Philip I, but none from Sagalassus, and all are still bareheaded. Due to the size of this coin, an attribution to the Antonine era seems most likely but is far from certain.
