AV KAI [M AY KOMOΔOC], laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front / HΓE Λ AIM IOYCTOY AYΓ TPAIANH C, river-god Hebrus reclining left, holding reed, resting arm on urn from which water flows. Schönert-Geiss, Augusta Traiana – (both dies unrecorded); RPC IV.1 –; Varbanov –. Rough green patina, earthen deposits. Near VF. Extremely rare, unpublished.

From the Dr. Michael Slavin Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 83 (18 February 2004), lot 93 (hammered for $180).

The hegemon L. Aemilius Justus was primarily known in Hadrianopolis, who’s brief rule lasted just over a year. Jurukova recorded three types while RPC now knows of six varieties for him at that city. We now know of two types struck in his name at Augusta Traiana, both were unknown to Schönert-Geiss when she published in 1991 and are incredibly rare.
