Al-Muti‘ was raised to the caliphate by the Buwayhids, who deposed and blinded his predecessor, al-Mustakfi. Constantly under the 'protection' of the Buwayhids, his influence was largely confined to religious matters and his secular power was negligible Donative issues in his sole name which do not mention his Buwayhid overlords, such as the present piece, are therefore very rare.
