THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION, Siris. Circa 525-480 BC. AR Stater (9.47 g). Ithyphallic satyr standing right, grasping hand of nymph fleeing right; three pellets around / Rough incuse square. Smith Group 3; AMNG III/2, -; HPM -; SNG ANS 950 var. (nymph’s left arm upward). Good VF, toned, cut in center of obverse, causing flan to bend. Wonderful archaic style. Rare.

The original attribution of this series to Lete was based on Svoronos' incorrect reading of a late, inscribed issue. More recent studies, and an exceptional inscribed example in Leu 81 (lot 147), clearly show that the ethnic is CIRINON (in retrograde) for the town of Siris (modern Serres).
