CAROLINGIANS. Charles the Bald (le Chauve), as King of France. 840-875 AD. AR Denier (21mm, 1.49 g, 3h). Melle mint. Struck 864-875 AD. Later strike, possibly 10th century. +CARLVS REX R, cross / +MET+VLLO, Karolvs monogram. M&G 1064; MEC I 960. VF, old toning, usual poor strike, a few peck marks.

Grierson in MEC attributes this variety to the latest period of striking, in the early 10th century. He also suggests that most if not all of the specimens with peck marks are from the huge 1840 Cuerdale hoard of Viking loot.
