THRACE, Mesembria. Circa mid-5th century BC. AR Obol (8mm, 0.54). Helmeted head of Athena left, Quadripartite incuse square. Cf. Karayotov 5, pl. 1, 1 = Gerassimov pg. 24, 1, pl. III, 1. Good VF. Possibly unique.
In discussing the first silver issues from Mesembria (pg. 18), Karayotov mentions a unique obol of this type in the Archaeological Museum in Sofia. However, the orientation of the letters on the reverse of the Sofia coin is slighty different from that of the present specimen.
