PACATIAN. 248-249 AD. AR Antoninianus (3.51 gm). Viminacium mint. IMP TI CL MAR PACATIANVS P F AV, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / PAX [A]ETERNA, Pax standing left, holding olive branch and transverse sceptre. RIC IV 5; Hunter 2; RSC 6 var. Toned Fine. ($3000)

Almost nothing is known of the usurper Tiberius Claudius Marinus Pacatianus, who revolted in Upper Moesia in 248 AD and remained in power at least until the following spring, when an extremely rare antoninianus (lot 1018 above), dated to the thousand-and-first year of Rome's foundation, was struck in his name. Viminacium has often been suggested as the site for Pacatian’s mint, since a comparison with the local aes coinage shows remarkable similarity of style, though no provincial issues are known to have been struck there in his name, and examples are recorded being recovered from Pannonia Superior and Gaul.
