CYPRUS, Koinon of Cyprus. Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. AR Tetradrachm (23.5mm, 12.18 g, 12h). Laureate head of Vespasian left; c/m: laureate head of Antoninus Pius(?) left within oval incuse / Zeus Salaminios standing facing, holding patera and scepter, with eagle perched on wrist. For coin: Prieur 1565; Parks 16d; RPC II 1804; for countermark: Prieur 1577 (this coin); Howgego 844i. Fine, toned, some porosity, reverse lamination; c/m: VF.

From the Michel Prieur Collection.

Prieur, Howgego, and the authors of RPC all catalog the countermark on this coin as depicting Marcus Aurelius, but to our eyes, it looks like Antoninus Pius. The legend is listed as ANTOC I V (or VI), which is inconclusive.
