THESSALY, Orthe. Late 4th-early 3rd centuries BC. Æ Chalkous (14mm, 2.99 g, 12h). Helmeted head of Athena right / OPΘIEIΩN around from upper left, forepart of horse right, emerging from rocks on which grows an olive tree; all within dotted circle. Georgiou, Coinage, Period III, 61 corr. (O26/R39; no olive wreath on rev.); Rogers 422 var. (olive wreath on rev.); BCD Thessaly II 501.2 (same rev. die); HGC 4, 703. VF, dark red-brown patina. Rare without wreath on reverse, only known from one reverse die.

From the BCD Collection.

Georgiou apparently did not notice that her reverse die 39 has a dotted border, rather than an olive wreath. She also listed her die combinations 61-63 as being from a single obverse die, 26, but combinations 62 and 63 are clearly from a different die than 61.
