CAROLINGIANS. Louis d'Outremer. As Louis IV, King of West Francia, 936-954. AR Denier (21mm, 0.99 g, 12h). Linconis (Langres) mint. + HLVD◊VICVS, large Ix (for Rx monogram) / + LINCONIS CVTS, cross pattée. Depeyrot 475; M&G 1636; MEC 1, 1004. VF, toned.

From the Simon Coupland Collection, purchased from ebaY France, February 2016 .

Compared with the coins of his his predecessors, and despite the length of his reign - 18 years, from 936 to 954 - coins of Louis IV are relatively rare. They are also almost uniformly poorly struck and often in poor condition as well. The symbol in the centre of the obverse is Rx, for rex, which over time deteriorated into a cross and a line. [S. Coupland]
